Yellow Bird
Painting in layers, à la Flora Bowley, is both easy and hard. It’s nice to know you can always paint over something that doesn’t please you. Those decisions are easy. What’s hard is to cover something you sort of like, or like well enough, in the hopes that you are creating something you like better, and maybe even love. Because you’ll never get back that specific painting you liked well enough. You lift the brush, you change the painting. There’s no going back. This is life.
My current dilemma is above: How to proceed without jeopardizing the yellow bird. And his tall blue friend.

kate – i love hearing all about flora’s class and your process with your paintings post-squam. one prompt in my painting class was to paint with your eyes closed for two minutes. i couldn’t do it the whole time because i was worried about messing up what i liked about my painting (which has yet to be salvaged). you beautifully captured what i’m running into, too. thank you for sharing!
I love this…and love that you’re painting! xo
Ah Kate…quite the conundrum to reckon with: how to protect that little yellow bird and his tall blue friend while attempting to construct a more pleasing and satisfying composition for yourself and those who so love your unique creations. Proceed cautiously, dear daughter, and with all the wisdom you can muster.
